Deadly weekend weather in Alps

Stiff winter winds and snowfall were blamed in the deaths of at least eight skiers in the French and Italian Alps last weekend.

Sunday afternoon, the bodies of two skiers were located by French search and rescue crews, a day after their families reported they went missing in an avalanche, Euronews.net reported.

The men, 23 and 27, were skiing in the Belledonne mountain range, where as much as 6 inches of snow fell during the weekend.

Italian officials reported a group of 12 skiers were caught in an avalanche on Monte Maniva, near the city of Brescia. Four skiers were killed, five were injured and three were missing Monday, the report said.

Saturday, Italian officials reported two young skiers had been killed near the resort town of Livigno, the report said.
