Police, officials targeted in Baghdad

Insurgents in Iraq have stepped up deadly attacks on police officers and government officials, with four such attacks reported Monday.

In Baghdad, Interior ministry officials said a bomb planted beneath the car of a religious education official killed the man's driver, and injured the official and three civilians, Alsumaria reported.

In the city's Mansour district, two attacks were reported. The first was a roadside bomb that killed two policemen and injured four others, officials said. The second was an ambush by gunmen who killed the security forces chief's assistant, the report said.

In Baquba, northeast of Baghdad, an explosion targeting the al-Najda police headquarters killed 14 civilians, police said. In July 2004, a similar bombing at the same place killed at least 68 people.

Another attack was reported west of the northern city of Kirkuk, where five Iraqi soldiers on patrol were killed by gunmen, a New York Times correspondent reported. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
