Romanian PSD demands demission of Romanian minister of foreign affairs
The Romanian PSD has demanded the demission of Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Adrian Cioroianu due to the Treaty where the term "Moldovan language" appears, according to the Mediafax agency.
General Secretary of PSD Titus Corlatean stated at Ramnicu Valcea on Monday that the PSD requests explanations for the part of Premier Taiceanu and demands the honour demission of Minister of Foreign Affairs Adrian Cioroianu following the adoption of the recent agreement between the European Commission and Moldova. "It is an act of irresponsibility. Such kind of document can not be adopted unless all the member states explicitly agree to this; in this case the accepting instructions for the part of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have been transmitted to the Romanian mission in Brussels. The PSD requests explanations from Premier Tariceanu, who has to publicly specify, both within the country and before the European Union how a similar abdication from Romania's official position regarding the term "the Moldovan language" could be possible. We demand the honour demission of the Minister of foreign affairs due to this serious incompetence, which undermines Romania's interests in the region." Titus Corlatean stated. The Romanian mass-media criticized the fact that Romania had accepted the signing of the two agreements between the EU and Moldova a week before which stipulated they were edited in the Moldovan language too. In line with the quoted source, Minister of Foreign Affairs Adrian Cioroianu and Romanian Ambassador to Brussels Lazar Comanescu "managed, as it seems, to unwillingly recognize the legal existence of the Moldovan language ". Minister of Foreign Affairs Adrian Cioroianu stated that the phrase "Moldovan language" is a political one and specified that Romania would not ratify any communitarian document which would include this formula. Cioroianu added that there were a range of precedents as for example the one which referred to Austria-Germany, when no one contested the fact that those were two different states which spoke the same language. The minister also said that the agreement relating to the visas had been negotiated by Moldova with the European Commission, while Romania should not have ratified it. Cioroianu specified that Romania would be in the situation not to sign any document between the EU and Moldova when they had to be ratified by each member state individually. According to Moldovan Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrei Stratan, the Agreements meant to facilitate the visa regime and readmission between Moldova and the European Commission, which had been recently signed between Chisinau and Brussels, were to be ratified in November by the European Parliament, and not by each EU member state. "All the EU member states are to express their position regarding the Agreements, but the ratification as it is of the documents does not require that each EU member state signs it individually." Stratan said. // BASA-Press Publication date: 18 October 2007 Source: Archive
