Banners vanish, like Cubs' playoff hopes
Chicago police were investigating the theft of three Chicago Cubs banners hours before the team's playoff hopes ended in a disappointing fashion.
Just like the hopes and dreams of many a Cubs fan were destroyed this weekend, three banners recognizing the team as the champion of MLB's National League Central Division went missing, The Chicago Sun-Times said Sunday. The three banners had been hung on three light poles in downtown Chicago, but apparently someone with poor judgment but a good sense of balance removed them early Saturday morning. So while the Cubs were being swept out of the playoffs by the Arizona Diamondbacks Saturday, Chicago police evidence technician Greg Horkavy was attempting to track down the mysterious thief. While searching for fingerprints and other evidence, the fact the banners were simply cut down gave Horkavy all the clues he needs. "It’s got to be a Cubs fan. A Sox fan would have burned them," he told the newspaper, referring to the Cubs' cross-town rivals, the Chicago White Sox. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International Publication date: 08 October 2007 Source: Archive
