Six Poles on trial for human trafficking
Six men, two of them policemen, have been accused of trafficking women from Poland to Austria to work as prostitutes.
The Polish public prosecutors’ office said the gang had operated for two years and was uncovered only when two women escaped after realizing they would be forced into prostitution in Austria, Polish Radio reported Friday. Poland’s Central Bureau of Investigation broke the gang’s operation, arrested its members and submitted evidence to the court. The trial is to be held before a district court in Wroclaw in southwestern Poland. The gang was well-organized, with members placing job-offering ads on Internet and in local newspapers and other members driving women from Poland to Austria, where they had already prepared accommodation, Polish Radio said. Most of women had worked in Polish “escort agencies” before accepting jobs with the gang. Once in Austria, they contacted a Polish woman who reportedly owned a chain of brothels in Vienna and Salzburg, the radio said. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International Publication date: 24 September 2007 Source: Archive
