Moldovan president receives Gagauzia lawmakers

Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin welcomes the Gagauzia Popular Assembly's striving for bringing the autonomous region's legislation in harmony with the all-national legislation. The head of state says, however, that such kind of changes should only be undertaken after consultation with Gagauzia's entire population, i.e. through a referendum, it was said during the meeting the President had with Assembly deputies Thursday.

As was already reported by Infotag, some time ago a group of PA members stood up with an initiative to rearrange the existing system of electing the autonomous region's governor - the Bashkan. Presently, the autonomy leader is elected by a nation-wide voting. The said group has proposed to begin electing Bashkan the way President is elected in the Republic of Moldova - in parliament. However, this initiative is being perceived very differently in that southern Moldovan region.

The initiators keep on repeating that electing of Bashkan in the Parliamentary Assembly will not only bring the Gagauz Yeri legislation in a better harmony with the all-Moldovan constitutional norms, but will also let save quite much money on such all-region elections. The guests of Voronin's pointed out that their initiative was inspired also by the political consensus achieved in the Moldovan Parliament last March and April, when the deputies were electing President of Moldova.

Vladimir Voronin emphasized: it is only through a consultation with the entire people that the region can achieve a result that will let preserve social-political stability in Gagauz Yeri and will not lead to violation of the democratic principle of the will expression. "Only such approach may correspond to the Republic of Moldova's European strivings", he added.

As was highlighted during the conversation, the positive dynamics of socio-economic development of Gagauzia populated areas has become possible thank to the agreed-on position achieved between the central and Gagauzia authorities on main objectives of the region development, and thank to the constructive interaction between the Bashkan and the Popular Assembly. // Infotag
