Romanian Lawmakers Set May 19 for Presidential Impeachment Vote
Romanian lawmakers have set May 19 as the date for a referendum on whether to impeach President Traian Basescu.
Parliament suspended Mr. Basescu last week after charging him with violating the constitution. This paved the way for the vote, which will determine whether the president actually is impeached. Meanwhile, Senate Chairman Nicolae Vacaroiu is serving as interim president. Lawmakers have accused Mr. Basescu of creating political instability, pressuring the judiciary, and violating the constitution by refusing to appoint cabinet members proposed by Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu. Relations between Mr. Basescu and Prime Minister Tariceanu have been tense for the past year. // Voice of America Publication date: 25 April 2007 Source: Archive
