Moldova to take over CIS presidency from Kyrgyzstan

The Republic of Moldova will take over the presidency of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) from Kyrgyzstan on January 1, 2009. The decision was made at the Summit of CIS Heads of State held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, the presidential press service informs.

According to the quoted source, Moldova will take over the presidency of all the CIS institutions – the Council of Heads of State, the Council of Heads of Government, the Council of Foreign Ministers and the CIS Economic Council. It was also decided that the ordinary CIS Summit the next year will be held in Chisinau, on October 9.

The delegation of Moldova signed the agreement to declare 2009 - the Year of CIS Youth and the agreement to declare 2010 – the Year of Science and Innovation. Moldova also backed the proposal to set up a working group composed of finance ministers that would examine the global financial crisis in order to reduce its impact on the CIS member states.

The Moldovan delegation also signed the Economic Development Strategy of the CIS until 2020, the agreement on cooperation in energy industry in 2009 and the regulations concerning the holding of the CIS presidency.
