More than 300 laptop computers have been stolen from elementary and high schools in New York City in just the last two months, said city police.

That's a 30-percent increase over the same period last year and education officials say they suspect school employees rather than students, The New York Post reported Monday.

Nearly 50 schools have reported thefts, including one school in The Bronx where a surveillance video showed someone removing a cart with 36 computers stacked on it, the Post reported, noting five laptops were stolen last week from the Harlem Success Academy, a charter school on West 118th Street.

The crimes rarely are solved because the cases go to overworked detectives already handling shootings, muggings and more serious crime, the Post reported.
