Disbarred lawyer convicted of killing wife

A disbarred lawyer from Chappaqua, N.Y., has been convicted of killing his wife in a scheme to collect insurance money.

Carols Perez-Olivio, 60, was convicted Saturday of second-degree murder in the Nov. 18, 2006, death of Peggy Perez-Olivio, The (White Plains, N.Y.) Journal News reported Sunday.

Perez-Olivio maintained he and his wife were ambushed in their car near Milford by gunmen hired by a disgruntled client, wounding Perez-Olivio in the stomach and killing his wife with a shot to the head.

Prosecutors argued Perez-Olivio, who faces 25 years to life, was the lone gunman in a scheme to collect $882,000 on his wife's life insurance policies, reported the Mid-Hudson News Network.

Assistant District Attorney Perry Perrone said Perez-Olivio began increasing his wife's life insurance pay out in 2006 after he was disbarred for stealing from clients.

His career as an attorney was over -- his career as husband was over, Perrone told the jury.
