Political party seeks cancellation of university admission quotas

Representatives of the Liberal Party (PL) demand that the Government cancel the university admission quotas set in 2006 and respect the autonomy of all the educational establishments.

The PL president Mihai Ghimpu told a news conference on August 4 that by adopting the Government Decision of April 25, 2006, which sets admission quotas at private and state universities, the right to education and the status of the universities are violated.

Mihai Ghimpu said that the holders of secondary school graduation certificates are disadvantaged in the admission process. They are offered only 15% of the total number of places in higher educational institutions. The other places are reserved for holders of Baccalaureate diplomas.

The vice president of the PL Youth Organization Mihai Pascovschi said that the Government aims to offer more places at pedagogical faculties, but it is known that after graduation, most of the young specialists don’t want to work in the area. He also said that by limiting the number of places for Master’s Degree studies, the Government sabotages the Bologna Process, which Moldova joined.

The Liberal Party says that the young people from families affected by floods should be provided with places financed from the state budget for the whole period of studies, free places in dormitories, bonuses to scholarships and substantial allowances as well as advantages when traveling by public transport.

As many as 28,000 young people have applied for the available 25,360 university places this year.//REPORTER.MD
