PLDM asks European institutions to get involved in democratization process in Moldova
The Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (PLDM) called on the EU member states and the European institutions to get involved in the democratization process in Moldova with a view to preventing the rigging of the 2009 elections.
In an appeal launched on July 22, PLDM asks the European institutions, the Council of Europe and the US Government not to offer technical and financial assistance until the electoral threshold of 4% is restored, the parties are allowed to form electoral blocks, the persons that have dual nationality are allowed to hold public posts and the Opposition is permitted access to the national television. ![]() PLDM also says that the European institutions should demand that the Moldovan authorities immediately return to the practices and policies of a democratic state and that definite steps are taken to combat corruption among high-ranking officials. At a news conference on July 22, PLDM vice president Alexandru Tanase said that the 2009 elections are already being rigged by harassing the Opposition parties, restricting the opposition leaders’ access to the national television and manipulating the Broadcasting Coordination Council. “In 2009, it will not be a simple poll, but an overthrow for at least eight years (two mandates). That’s why it is important that the West takes attitude towards what is happening,” Tanasa said.//REPORTER.MD Publication date: 22 July 2008 Source: Archive
