Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore told a gathering of liberal Internet bloggers in Austin, Texas, the country needs to break its dependence on fossil fuels.

About 2,000 people attended the Netroots convention Saturday while 500 conservative bloggers met nearby at the Defending the American Dream Summit, the Houston Chronicle reported.

Gore arrived on the Netroots stage during a question-and-answer session with U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was holding a question-and-answer session.

Gore told the liberal bloggers the United States needs to move away from fossil fuels and become totally reliant on electricity from renewable sources within a decade.

But Wall Street Journal editorial page staffer Steve Moore told the conservative group that the 1930s was a much warmer decade than the past 10 years.

He charged scientists are making all this stuff up and called global warming the greatest hoax of the 21st century, the Chronicle said.
