A tropical storm is developing off the Carolina coast with winds building up in a tropical depression, the National Hurricane Center said Saturday.

The weather center told CNN that as the tropical winds strengthen off the U.S. coast, the possibility of a tropical storm increases. Storm watches and warnings have been issued for most coastal regions of both North and South Carolina.

The depression could become a tropical storm later today, with continued strengthening possible on Sunday, the center said.

The center added if the system develops winds with speeds of about 35 mph, it would become a storm named Cristobal.

The forecasters told CNN Hurricane Bertha was still raging in northern portions of the Atlantic Ocean, despite temporarily decreasing in power to a tropical storm rating.
