Taiwan typhoon death toll raised to 16

The death toll on Taiwan from Typhoon Kalmaegi has been raised to 16, officials said Saturday.

Eleven people remained missing after the storm came ashore in northern Taiwan Thursday bringing high winds and heavy rains, the state-run Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.

Nearly two feet of rain fell within seven hours in parts of southern Taiwan, overwhelming drainage capacity and causing most of the fatalities.

The news agency said Kalmaegi weakened into a severe tropical storm early Friday, hitting eastern Fujian Province on the mainland. By Saturday morning, the eye of the storm was in eastern China's Zhejiang Province and was continuing to move inland.
