Tiraspol refuses to give back Moldova’s Post Office vehicle held up last week

Transdniestria refuses to release the motor vehicle of the state-owned company Moldova’s Post Office that was to transport mail and pensions of US$13,000 for residents of the villages that are under Moldova’s control. The Transdniestrian side asked for information about the origin of the money and how it is transported.

According to REPORTER.MD’s correspondent in Tiraspol, such a statement was made by the co-president of the Joint Control Commission on behalf of Tiraspol, Oleg Beleakov at the Commission’s extraordinary meeting on July 4. Though Moldova’s representatives in the JCC insisted discussing the problem and identifying a solution, the co-presidents on behalf of Russia and Transdniestria said that the situation must be remedied by Moldova’s and Transdniestria’s Post Offices only.

According to the JCC co-president representing Russia Victor Sanin, the military observers should not intervene in the given situation because they cannot establish who the money belongs to. “This is an attempt to use the Commission as hostage of a concrete situation and this is inadmissible,” Sanin said.

The Moldovan side refused to sign the meeting’s proceedings, reason for which the July 4 meeting will continue on July 7.

The incident happened on July 2 at about 11.00. The vehicle of Moldova’s Post Office was held up at the customs office in Dubasari. Shortly afterward, the JCC co-president on behalf of Moldova Ion Solonenco and the JCC co-president representing Transdniestria Oleg Beliacov took measures to solve the problem, but their instructions were not carried out.

The stopping of the car is a serious violation of the JCC’s decision of March 1993, which says that the tax and debt collectors of Moldova and Transdniestria can move freely and have the right to bear arms on the territory of the Security Zone.//REPORTER.MD
