Moldova will receive 40m euros in assistance from EC over the next three years

During the next three years, the European Commission will provide financial assistance worth 40 million euros to Moldova as part of the European Neighborhood and Partnership Instrument (ENPI).

Today, Prime Minister Zinaida Greceanii and Marcus Cornaro, Director at the Directorate General EuropeAid of the European Commission, have signed Financing Agreements to the total value of 40 million euros of new support to the Republic of Moldova.

The European Commission is providing assistance to Moldova entirely under the form of grants. The new aid package contains a sectoral budget support for social reforms worth 21 million euros. It also includes improvement of border management (11 millions euros), technical assistance and twinning (linking of Moldova and EU member states’ administrations, 6 million euros) and support to the civil society in the Transnistria region (2 million euros).

The financing source is the national program for Moldova of the European Commission’s ENPI, the successor since 2007 of the TACIS program. In particular, the new EC social sector budget support will help Moldova to implement its recently adopted social assistance law which envisions a better identification of beneficiaries and a targeted support to socially vulnerable families and individuals.

The other financing agreements signed today provide for the establishment of a new radio communication network in support for the Moldovan border guards as well as other relevant institutions, the provision of expert advise related to the adoption by Moldova of EU norms and standards and the funding of small-scale initiatives carried out by the civil society on the left bank of the Dniester river.

By the end of 2010, the total volume of aid granted by the European Union to Moldova is expected to reach about 400 million euros.// Reporter.MD
