NATO does not have and does not intend to play a role in Transdniestrian settlement, says Jaap de Hoop Scheffer
The Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said Monday that NATO does not intend to play any role in the settlement of the Transdniestrian conflict.
"Moldova makes progress under the partnership program. I am in permanent contact with the Moldovan authorities. But NATO does not have and does not intend to play a role in the Transdniestrian settlement,” Scheffer said after a meeting with Romania’s President Traian Basescu, who was on a visit to Brussels. According to Rompres, the NATO official made the statement when asked by a journalist if they discussed the possibility that Moldova could give up joining NATO if it signs a treaty to solve the Transdniestrian dispute with Russia. For his part, Traian Basescu stressed that NATO cannot get involved in the dispute between Chisinau and Tiraspol because according to the Constitution, Moldova is a neutral state// Reporter.MD Publication date: 02 July 2008 Source: Archive
