A Baltimore highway was closed overnight after a tractor-trailer carrying car batteries overturned, spilling fuel and battery acid.

The Jones Falls Expressway section of Interstate 83 reopened Wednesday morning, more than 12 hours after the accident, The Sun, a Baltimore newspaper, reported.

Chief Kevin Cartwright, a spokesman for the Baltimore fire department, said the truck driver climbed out of the cab. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

At least 40 gallons of diesel fuel spilled onto the highway along with the battery acid, Cartwright said. Employees of the Maryland Department of the Environment and firefighters cleaned up the liquids while workers for a contractor loaded the batteries into another truck, The Sun reported.

The fuel and acid was removed without leaking into Jones Falls. authorities said.
