Everglades fires consume 33,000 acres

A series of wildfires raging through the Everglades National Park in Florida spread to encompass nearly 33,000 acres by Sunday morning, fire officials said.

Fire officials said the blazes were 20 percent contained, but noted high winds pushed the flames closer to Miami. Officials put the total damage estimate at over $9 million, CNN said.

Emergency officials said the heavy smoke poses a health hazard to area residents, as strong winds accompanied temperatures in the upper 90s. Wildlife officials told The Miami Herald that several threatened or engendered species were at risk from the blaze.

Hundreds of firefighters battled to contain several blazes throughout south Florida, though the National Interagency Fire Center said one blaze near Daytona Beach should be fully contained by Tuesday.

That fire erupted Wednesday when the crew of a Navy jet missed a practice target in the Ocala National Forest. The F/A-18 Super Hornet dropped a 500-pound laser-guided bomb that hit a mile from its target, officials at Jacksonville Naval Air Station said.
