President Voronin calling to remember feat that brought freedom in 1945

Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin called upon compatriots to eternally remember “the feat of the people that brought freedom to the country on May 9, 1945”. He stated this last Friday on a massive rally on the occasion of the Victory Day to commemorate all those who sacrificed their lives in the Second World War. The victory anniversary was marked in practically every Moldovan locality.

Voronin stressed, “The right of freedom and solidarity needs to be struggled for every day and every hour… and this struggle is inseparable from our sincere gratitude to all those who won the Victory in 1945”.

He said that some local politicians harbor an illusion that contempt to the exploits by the heroes of that war can be combined with the ideals of democracy, and that “such people are even trying to put on airs while they dare blasphemously call the war veterans as occupants of Moldova. These so-called politicians must realize clearly that no matter which ultra-modern political camouflage they wear, they are but modern fascists – and nothing more”.

“We have no doubt that nobody shall ever dare throw a shadow on the feat of our fathers… And a proof to this is this Eternal Fire restored here at the Military Glory Memorial of Chisinau. That’s the care we give to your, dear veterans. And another proof to this is the new generation of the youth who stand ready to continue your struggle for justice and democracy”, stated President Voronin, addressing the war vets.

He said, on May 9, 1945 it became finally clear that justice and peace could be achieved only by joint effort and only through a unity of nations and on the basis of the sincere ideals of democracy and solidarity.

Voronin pointed out that no matter how awful the conflict and wars of the last several decades were, they were incomparable with the human and moral losses of the Second World War: 50 million people killed in action, many million innocent civilians perished, and tremendous cultural values lost forever.

“But we firmly believe that all this will never happen again, that the path of freedom and human dignity is irreversible, and that the mankind made its final choice 63 years ago. A proof to this is the united Europe, the modern law and values severely condemning any attempt to rehabilitate ethnic intolerance, racism and fascism”, stated Vladimir Voronin.

He reminded the public of the immortal words said in 1943 by Czech journalist Julius Fucik who called upon people to be always vigilant.

“We remember and repeat his call, and we remember not only the bloody fratricidal war on the Dniester in 1992 but also the subsequent years of rule by political marauders who devastated our Motherland – Moldova, who annihilated its economy and the social dignity of our compatriots, and first and foremost of war veterans”, stated the Communist leader.

In his words, exactly such vigilance permitted Moldova to stand up from its knees starting from 2001 [when the Communist Party he chairs came into power], to feel a nation, a real society, and the builder of its future. // Infotag
