A South Jersey 14-year-old who allegedly gave birth in a public bathroom during a Cinco de Mayo festival has been charged with the murder of her newborn.

Cleaners found the body Sunday at the Cumberland County Fairgrounds. Prosecutor Ronald Casella said the girl, a student at Bridgeton High School, put the baby into the toilet tank Saturday night, where it drowned, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

The girl has already given birth to one child, the Bridgeton News said. She does not have custody of that child, born when she was 13.

Casella said he has not decided whether to charge the girl, identified only by the initials I.S., as a juvenile or an adult. If convicted as a juvenile, she could be sentenced to as much as 20 years in custody while an adult conviction could mean a sentence of 30 years to life.
