Police can claim damages for mental injury

Amsterdam police said they are pleased with a new measure allowing them to claim damages from criminals for physical and mental injuries.

The new measure says police officers can seek damages for the cost of psychotherapy to treat mental trauma caused from perpetrators' violent acts, Radio Netherlands reported.

It is reported the measure came after an incident in 2007 when a group of ruffians attacked a police vehicle, prompting the officers to seek protection inside a restaurant.

The street toughs were prosecuted for causing physical and mental injuries to the officers, the report said.

Amsterdam police officials told Radio Netherlands they are satisfied with the new measure as it supports efforts to stop violence against law enforcement workers.
