It is insufficient to rely only on the European Union’s wish to have Moldova closer to it. It is essential that Moldova must itself wish, and work for, accession to the EU, believes Graham Watson, the leader of the liberal group in the European Parliament since 2002.
Last Tuesday, the European Parliament held the first-ever public hearings on the European future of the Republic of Moldova, during which a special emphasis was put on the Chisinau-Bucharest relations.
Graham Watson presumes Moldova needs better governance and more resolution in implementing reforms. He believes next several years will show what the Moldovan leadership believes to be more important – reforms in the localities or a usual rhetoric.
The European parliamentarians expressed hope the Moldovan authorities would ensure a correct holding of the 2009 parliamentary elections – without pressing on the mass media or candidates. //
