Berlin has introduced a high-tech mini-computer that navigates the path of the Berlin Wall, explaining to tourists its past using multimedia technology.

Berlin's government launched the hand-sized Mauerguide along with a plan to retain historical information about the Berlin Wall, which separated East and West Berlin from 1961 until it was torn down in 1989, Der Spiegel reported.

The device, launched May 1, comes complete with video and audio telling the story of the Wall and a global positioning system to navigate the parts of the wall that remain along this historic path.

It is reported the computer, which is similar to devices used at museums, can be rented for as little as $9 an hour by cyclists and pedestrians.

Berlin realizes that it would have been better to leave more of the Wall intact in the center to help keep people aware of Germany's history, said Julia von Gultlingen of Antenna Audio, the company that developed the device.
