Due to the European Union, Moldova doesn’t appear for the first time in front of Transnistria as a beggar of reunification
The portal Moldova Azi publishes a commentary with the title “The meeting Voronin-Smirnov in the shadow of the European Union”, which focuses on the recent meeting of the president of RM Vladimir Voronin and the separatist leader Igor Smirnov in the context of the European aspiration of the Republic of Moldova.
We notice that, despite the fact “nobody contests the fact that the Russian diplomacy contributed to the resumption of negotiations Voronin-Smirnov by means of diplomatic efforts”, in reality, the real impulse for these negotiations was issued by the European Union: “EU was the one to have changed the reality in this field, by calling Tiraspol for negotiations”. „EU influenced Ukraine to implement the new customs system, and mainly the actions of EU at the borders forced indirectly Transnistrian companies to register in Chsiinau”. In this context, “only Russia could compensate by means of Tiraspol’s support the effects of EU’s actions. The resumption of the Moldo-Russian dialogue contributed to the interruption of the Russian support for Transnistria. EU was the one to have created this situation in Transnistria and have out the basis of the reintegration of the unique economical space of the Republic of Moldova”. Further on, Moldova Azi writes that the second element of the EU strategy refers to Moldova’s accession to EU, in order to make it more attractive for the citizens of Transnistria: “The action plan, the agreement of facilitation of visa system, economical assistance, the assistance for customs and frontier guard services are elements of this strategy”. According to the commentator from Moldova Azi, the most important strategy “is the facilitation of trade by means of the EU Generalized System of Preferences (GSP+) and from March 2008, by means of autonomous trade preferences (ATP), a system applied only in Balkan states and Moldova”. The third strategic element, Moldova Azi writes, refers to “the promise of some economical benefits even greater in the case of reintegration of the country”, because “in a reunified Moldova, the citizens of Transnistria will have the possibility to benefit from the EU support”. „The real reunification of Moldova will not take place by signing a paper called constitution, agreement or memorandum (...). Moldova’s reunification will fail if it is not recorded within the country’s European integration, including state institutions from Chisinau which still remain unreformed and non-European”. „For the first time in 1992, time works for Moldova. The more Moldova approaches EU the more functional and more attractive it is, making it be closer to the real resolution of the conflict”, Moldova Azi concludes. // DECA-Press Publication date: 01 May 2008 Source: Archive
