Railroad consultations end in nothing

Profiled Chisinau and Tiraspol experts sat in Odessa (Ukraine) on Wednesday to discuss possibilities of resuming a full-bodied railroad communication via the Transnistrian region, but failed to harmonize their positions.

As Infotag has already reported, Tiraspol is proposing, as the first step towards regular movement resumption, to rehabilitate the extremely popular and necessary Chisinau-Tiraspol-Odessa line [some 150 kilometers long, several runs a day, thousands of passengers daily]. Besides this, Tiraspol is ready to offer free of charge transit of Moldovan trains via Transnistria – on condition that Chisinau acts likewise with respect to Tiraspol.

However, the National Railroad Company of Moldova (CFM) is insisting on a complex-like solution of the problem, with an account of international standards of railroad transport functioning, and on full restoration of the Republic of Moldova railroad network unity.

The sides signed a protocol, and agreed to meet again soon.

The sessions of working groups on confidence-building measures began last week on the initiative of Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin, who has resumed dialog with Transnistrian leader Igor Smirnov after a 7-year-long break. // Infotag
