Moldovan citizens want in EU, but they believe that Moldova’s strategic partner must be Russia
If next Sunday, a referendum were organized in term of accession to European Union, 71,7% of the citizens of Moldova would vote ”for”, while 10% - “against”. According to them, most of all, Moldova can be helped to join EU by Romania – 44,2%, Russia - 27,9% and Bulgaria – 4,4%.
The Barometer of Public Opinion published on Wednesday shows that one third of the respondents consider that Moldova may become a member of EU in the next ten years, almost 20% - in the next 4-5 years, 13 percent consider that this may happen in 20-25 years, and 8% believe this will never happen, DECA-press Agency transmits. BOP also shows that half of the respondents consider that Russia must be the main strategic partner of Moldova. This must be followed by EU – 20% and Romania – 17%. The opinion poll also shows that, if next Sunday, a referendum regarding Moldova’s accession to NATO were organized, over 40 percent would vote against, 22,7% would vote for, and 22% do not know yet. // DECA-Press Publication date: 24 April 2008 Source: Archive
