Moldova, Russia point out positive dynamic of Transnistria settlement process
After the April 11 meeting between Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin and Transnistrian leader Igor Smirnov, a certain positive dynamic can be observed in realization of the initiatives aimed at working out confidence-building measures and resumption of the negotiation process in the format of 5+2. This opinion was shared at the Tuesday’s meeting Moldovan Minister of Reintegration Vasile Sova had here with the Russian Federation’s Representative at the Transnistrian conflict negotiations, Ambassador-at-Large Valery Nesteroushkin.
The two discussed the current shape and perspectives of the Transnistrian settlement, highlighted Chisinau’s readiness to request the European Union to lift the travel ban put on top-ranked representatives of the Transnistrian administration, and Tiraspol’s decision to eliminate the existing impediments to a free movement of people and cargoes between the two parts of the country, which they are convinced will promote the conflict settlement process. The interlocutors underlined that the April 14-15 consultations, held in Odessa (Ukraine) in the 5+2 format and the onset of the activity of Chisinau and Tiraspol working groups on confidence-building measures are opening real perspectives for working out and realization of joint projects in the socio-economic sphere, infrastructure development, and humanitarian field. Nesteroushkin reaffirmed Russia’s readiness to render support to the restarted Transnistrian settlement process. The day before, Transnistrian minister of foreign affairs Valery Litkai, too, assured Valery Nesteroushkin that Tiraspol is interested in finding practical solutions to socio-economic, transport, infrastructure-development problems existing between Transnistria and Moldova, if only the work of Chisinau and Tiraspol experts in these fields is based on the principles of consensus and mutual benefits. // Infotag Publication date: 23 April 2008 Source: Archive
