Voronin and Smirnov agreed upon necessity of convoking common working groups to bolster confidence measures between Chisinau and Tiraspol

Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin and breakaway Transnistrian leader Igor Smirnov met on Friday, April, 11, in Tighina following a seven-year pause. Sources within the Presidential Apparatus stated for BASA-press that the two leaders discussed the prospects of continuing the dialog between Chisinau and Tiraspol and established some real measures to intensify the negotiation process.

Voronin and Smirnov agreed upon the necessity of an urgent convoking of the common working groups to bolster measures of confidence between Chisinau and Tiraspol. The activity of the groups is to result in launching a range of real projects in the field of infrastructure development, road building, in the field of security and disarmament, in the social and humanitarian field.

Vladimir Voronin mentioned that the current constructive atmosphere in the Transnistrian conflict settlement allows Moldova to address the European Union and the USA with the initiative to cancel the restrictions on circulation applied to the Transnistrian leaders.

For his turn, Igor Smirnov stated that Transnistria cancels all the restrictions on circulation on the region’s territory applied to the representatives of Moldovan leadership.

Voronin and Smirnov agreed to organize regularly such kind of meetings to solve gradually the problems which occurred in the relations between Chisinau and Tiraspol.
