John Beyer: eradication of corruption and how Gagauzia is treated are aspects Chisinau should think about to be more attractive for Transnistria

The supremacy of law, the eradication of corruption and the way the Gagauzian autonomy is treated are the aspects Moldova should think about to be more attractive for Transnistria, Great Britain’s Ambassador to Moldova John Beyer stated within the second Annual International Conference „Transnistrian conflict settlement in the context of Moldova’s Europeanization”.

According to the head of the diplomatic mission „Moldova has registered significant progresses in improving the democracy and the rule of law. Chisinau has to carry on the reforms in order to join the European Union (EU). From Great Britain’s point of view, Moldova must be the EU member.” the ambassador said. In this context, Head of European Commission Delegation to Moldova Cesare de Montis mentioned that “the bilateral relations between Moldova and the EU are on the right way”, Montis specified.

Sub-secretary of Lithuanian Foreign Ministry Zygimantas Pavilionis stated that Moldova has registered much success the last six months and made much effort for such a small country. "Soon, Moldova will be ready for a new Cooperation Partnership Agreement with the EU. Chisinau must impress its European colleagues by being serious, by the advance of reforms. This has many advantages in the process of Moldova’s European integration. Moldova must bolster its relationships with Romania and Ukraine, because having more friends Moldova will have more success.” the Lithuanian official said.

President of Commission for Foreign Policy and European Integration in Moldova Grigore Petrenco stated that as long as Moldova is dismembered from Transnistria will not adhere to the EU. It is important enough to resume as soon as possible the process of negotiation in the "5+2" format. "Many experts consider that it is not very beneficiary for Moldova to be very close to Russia, but we consider that the approach to Russia must be carried out better and better. The Transnistrian conflict settlement must be carried out in the 5+2” format, Petrenco said.

The Annual International Conference „Transnistrian conflict settlement in the context of Moldova’s Europeanization” was held in Chisinau, on March, 26-27, 2008. Great Britain’s Ambassador to Moldova John Beyer, EU Special Representative for Moldova Kalman Mizsei, Head of CE Delegation in Moldova Cezare de Montis, Grigore Petrenco, President of Commission for Foreign Policy and European Integration in Moldova Grigore Petrenco participated in the conference.

OSCE Mission Relations with Public Representative in Moldova Claus Neukirch, Moldovan Minister of Reintegration Vasile Sova, US Ambassador to Moldova Michael D. Kirby as well as representatives for the part of Russia took part in the event.

The first international conference of this kind took place in Chisinau, on November, 27, 2007, entitled „Moldova in Europe – Europe in Moldova”, where many officials both form Moldova and the EU participated. // BASA-Press
