Midwest farmers cashing in on wind

Farmers in Wisconsin say they are cashing in on a new crop -- wind.

While some Wisconsin farmers have planted acres of corn for ethanol, others are making a buck putting wind turbines in their fields, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported Tuesday.

The newspaper reported that more than 170 turbines are in two new wind farm projects in Fond du Lac and Dodge counties, and along U.S. Highway 41 there is a new crop of turbines near Brownsville and Lomira.

The push for wind turbines comes amid a new state law requiring that by 2015 at least 10 percent of the state's electricity must be generated from renewable energy sources, such as wind turbines, solar panels, landfill gas and cow-manure-to-energy systems.

John Bertram of Calumet has one wind turbine on his 320-acre farm, where he grows corn, wheat, soybeans and alfalfa.

People don't want dirty air, and so they don't want it produced with coal, and they don't want it produced with nuclear, and it seems like oil and gas aren't in unlimited supplies, he said.
