Gagauz yeri electing new popular assembly
The March 16 elections for the Popular Assembly of Gagauzia, an autonomous region in southern Moldova, were recognized as valid, the Chairman of the region’s electoral commission, Peter Ivanov, told your Infotag correspondent.
According to him, the voter turnout in the region was on the average 64.8%, with attendance figures ranging between over 80% and 40% in various populated areas. Ivanov said the elections were recognized as valid in all the 35 electoral constituencies. By the regional legislation, an election is considered as valid if attended by one-third of registered residents eligible to vote. At the moment, the electoral commission is processing the ballot papers, “But even now we can say that a second round of voting will be needed in many localities”, Ivanov said. By law, the second round is to be held in 2 week’s time, so this will be on March 30. In the first round, the 35-member Popular Assembly was contested by 159 candidates, of whom 79 were independent runners. // Infotag Publication date: 17 March 2008 Source: Archive
