Moldova preparing declaration draft on international recognition of its neutrality

Moldova is preparing a declaration draft on international recognition of its neutrality. The statement has been made by Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin, within an interview granted to the Russian paper „Kommersant”.

„In spite of the fact that Moldova’s Constitution stipulates it is a neutral state, the declaration we are preparing is necessary in order this status to be recognized by everyone.” the president stated.

Voronin affirmed that the document has to be signed by all the parties which participate in the negotiation process in the „5+2” format, except Tiraspol (breakaway Transnistrian capital city). Thus, the document is to be signed by Moldova, as a sovereign state, as well as Russia, Ukraine, the USA, the EU and the OSCE.

Being asked what will be the reaction of the USA and the EU towards the declaration of neutrality, Voronin stated that „each country decides on its own to be neutral or not. It is an interior issue which is related to the sovereignty.” „We do not intend to ask them to agree, but to internationally recognize Moldova’s status of neutrality.” Voronin said.

In the same context, referring to the peace-keeping mission, the president mentioned that the status of neutrality excludes any military presence on the territory of the country and that he sees Moldova being not only neutral but also demilitarized in the future. „The peace-keeping forces have already accomplished their mission. That is why; nowadays the focus is on the civil security mission. We accept the presence of civil observers in the region but not military peace-keepers.” Voronin emphasized.  // BASA-Press
