WIKILEAKS: German-Russian deal over Moldova

Angela Merkel and Vladimir Putin will strike a deal on Moldova, which will leave Moldova under Russia’s influence, shows a report from Wikileaks. The ‘deal’ should have been discussed in June 2011.

“It is a "German proposal" being offered to the Moldovan and Transnistrian governments though Russia helped write it. The proposal is that the Transnistrians will get representation (could be 5 or 15 percent, or proportional) inside of the Moldovan parliament,” according to the same document from Wikileaks.

Germany did not forget to ask for something in return from Russia. The Germans want a better influence of the European Union or OSCE peacekeepers to help supervise militarily the region of Transnistria.

“Not that Russia said they will, but that they are open to the possibility. Russia is comfortable with this as their troops would stay, and then they would have a firm pro-Russian Moldovan government,” shows the document.

“The Moldovans absolutely love German attention, as it makes them feel important. Moreover, the Germans are offering some carrots – economic investment and other ties.”

The source also states that Romania will not get involved in the problem so much because Romanians “have given up really caring about Moldova.” The report explains that Romania considers the USA their security guarantee and does not care that Russia is in their neighborhood.
