Washington: John Todd Steward, Arcadie Barbǎroşie and Viorel Gîrbu
Chisinau / Moldova.ORG / -- The discussions on the Moldova’s situation continue, being moderated by John Todd Stewart, U.S. Ambassador in Moldova during 1995-1998, member of Advisory Council, Moldova Foundation, USA; Arcadie Barbarosie, Executive Director of the Institute for Public Policy in Moldova, Viorel Girbu, Adviser of the President, Academy of Sciences.
John Todd Stewart drew attention to the necessity of a transparent legal system for the functioning of democracy in a country. According to Arcadie Barbǎroşie, the judicial system in Moldova is one of the important issues which need immediate settlement. He also specified the role of mass-media in the functioning of an efficient State and establishing new methods of its work. Referring to politics, Mr. Barbǎroşie said that "we have no political parties... they are not democratic." Regarding "european integration", he said that liberalization of visa regime with European Union would contribute to the reduction of human trafficking.
Viorel Girbu focused his speech more on the economic issues of the Republic of Moldova, specifying the need “to develop a medium term economic catch-up strategy and change the main objectives of monetary system”.
