Video: Sarah Palin Resigns as Alaska Governor
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said Friday she is resigning from office on July 26, raising speculation that she would focus on a run for the White House in the 2012 race. Palin, 45, is a major star in the GOP and is seen as a leading candidate for the party's presidential nomination.
The former Republican vice presidential candidate for 2008 made the surprise announcement from her home in suburban Wasilla on Friday morning. She leaves office before the end of her first term, reelection is scheduled for 2010.
"We know we can effect positive change outside government at this moment in time on another scale and actually make a difference for our priorities," Palin said in a news conference alongside a lake in her hometown of Wasilla, Alaska. She didn't explain why she decided to step down.
"I promised effectiveness. I am not wired to operate under the same old politics as usual. I promised that four years ago and I meant it," Palin said, adding it was "time to pass the ball for victory."
"I am determined to take the right path for Alaska even though it is unconventional and it is not so comfortable. With this announcement that I am not seeking re-election, I have determined it is best to transfer the authority of governor to Lieutenant Governor Parnell."
Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell (R) appeared with Palin and complimented her service to the state of Alsaka.
