US visit to Chisinau to confirm support to Moldova
The USA's constant political support and the valuable assistance for the consolidation of democracy and economic reforms comes to back the achievement of Moldova's European integration. The statement was made by Parliament Speaker and acting President Mihai Ghimpu at his meeting with Director of the Bureau for Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova of the US Department of State, Larry Silverman, the parliament's mass media relations department has said.
Ghimpu stressed the importance of the assistance given by the USA to strengthen the state based on the rule of law and restore the Moldovan economy. A conclusive example in this respect is the 262-million-dollar-worth technical and financial assistance given within an agreement on full assistance from the funds of the Millennium Challenge Corporation, as well as the support provided while negotiating an agreement with the International Monetary Fund.
Larry Silverman said that the USA sends a message of support for Moldova, especially in the context of achievements recorded by the new government. There are positive signals, therefore Moldova benefits from increased attention on behalf of the USA, and I believe that from the EU as well. The USA will back Moldova financially, technically, and certainly, in the European integration efforts, Larry Silverman said.
President Mihai Ghimpu thanked the USA for backing Moldova's sovereignty and territorial integrity. He spoke out for changing the USA's and European Union's status of mediators to full-fledged mediators within the 5+2 talks on the Transnistrian conflict settlement.
The officials advocated the complete withdrawal of the foreign troops, weaponry and ammunitions from Moldova, in line with the decisions by the Istanbul OSCE summit from 1999. They also spoke in favour of turning the present peacekeeping mission into a multinational mission of civil observers with international mandate. Mihai Ghimpu and Larry Silverman voiced hope that the consultations in the 5+2 format, which started in Vienna today, will help identify solutions to the Transnistrian problem.
At the end of the meeting, the sides exchanged opinions about the social and economic situation in Moldova, as well as the need to find efficient solutions to continue implementing the democratic reforms, overcome the constitutional crisis and avoid snap elections. "With the USA's and EU's support, Moldova will overcome the deadlock in which the country found itself after no reforms were carried out in the past 20 years," Mihai Ghimpu said.
