U.S. toughens stand against Myanmar junta

The Bush administration, tightening its pressure on Myanmar's military junta, will no longer allow several senior junta officials to enter the United States.

Reacting to the brutal crackdown on anti-government demonstrators in the past three days, the U.S. State Department Friday banned “more than three dozen” Myanmar officials and their families from entering the United States, The New York Times reported.

The action comes a day after the U.S. Treasury Department announced sanctions against 14 Myanmar leaders, the report said. The State Department announcement gave no names, but the Times report indicated the list of officials being denied entry into the United States likely includes those on the Treasury list.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown reportedly promised to ask for tougher European Union sanctions against the Myanmar military rulers during his video meeting with President George W. Bush. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
