United Gagauzia calls upon moldovan authorities for refusing

The United Gagauzia movement has called upon the Moldovan leadership for refusing to participate in the NATO exercises in Georgia, which will take place from May 6 to June 1 in Georgia. A statement by this movement recalls that in accordance with Article 11 of the Moldovan Constitution, the Republic of Moldova is a neutral state.

“That is why, we must not participate in the NATO exercises in Georgia, where its administration’s bellicose intentions are clear and which are dangerous for the entire civilized world”, the movement considers.

The statement recalls that Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev designated the NATO’s decision to carry out the military exercise in Georgia as “short-signed and non-partnership”. Kazakhstan, Estonia and Latvia have already announced their refusal to participate in the exercises.

“We request the Moldovan leadership to listen to the Russian President’s appeals. Moldova’s participation will inflict only damage on the Moldovan people, as it will ruin again, in the first place the reviving economic relations with the Russian Federation. The participation in the planned action of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization will not give us any advantages and values, for the sake of which Moldova could sacrifice the resumed friendly relations with the Russian Federation” the statement says.

The statement’s authors called upon the Moldovan authorities not to involve Moldovan servicemen into the exercise, where possible provocations can cause their perish.

As Infotag has already reported, the Cooperative Lancer/Longbow are combined exercises: maneuvers with field units (Cooperative Lancer) and maneuvers of the commandments and headquarters (Cooperative Longbow). They are conducted yearly in the frame of the NATO “Partnership for Peace Program”. The objective of the exercises is to learn and to train staff officers and officers of field military units to interact in the course of peacekeeping operations, carried on by multinational contingents of armed forces. In 2006 they were conducted in Moldova. This time militaries must train interaction between commandments and headquarters on maps and during the Cooperative Lancer phase from May 18 field exercises with battle shooting and with the use of lights military weaponry will be carried out. They are designed for training peacekeepers. About 1300 militaries from 19 countries are expected to participate in the exercises. Russia was invited to participate in the exercises in 2008, when they were conducted in Armenia.
