UN official: Punishments in Transnistria too harsh
An UN official stated that punishments in Transnistria are way too harsh compared to the international standards, Info-Prim Neo news agency reports.
Thomas Hammarberg, UN Senior Expert on Human Rights in the Transnistrian region has ended his trip to Moldova analyzing human rights issues on the left bank of Nistru River.
“The visit marked the start of an engagement aimed at providing guidance for the strengthening of the human rights on the territory. The expert said the punishments in the Transnistrian region are harsh because they are long-term ones,” the agency informs.
Hammarberg’s mission has involved listening to various stakeholders, with a view to gaining an understanding of human rights issues in the separatist region. The official met with members of civil society organizations, representatives of religious minorities and individuals with human rights concerns.
