Ukraine interested in Moldova's preserving its sovereignty and territorial integrity

Ukraine has always been and shall always be extremely interested in preservation of the Republic of Moldova's sovereignty and territorial integrity, Oleg Voloshin, Director of the Information Policy Department of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated yesterday, commenting the statement made by Romanian President Traian Basescu that the Republic of Moldova would be included into Romania in a near future.

Voloshin said that Ukraine regards Moldova's sovereignty and territorial integrity as a guarantee of peace and stability in the region, and that any changing of borders in Europe, no matter their motives or substantiations, "may lead to nothing but destabilization and to absolutely unpredictable consequences for the entire architecture of European security".

He stressed that presently, when an OSCE Summit is continuing in Astana (Kazakhstan), it is particularly important that all the OSCE member states confirm their adherence to the principles of territorial integrity and internationally recognized borders on the European continent.

"In this connection, any statements, no matter from whom they come, on a possible decentralization of Moldova and on a possible shifting of its borders into no matter what direction, are causing nothing but concern and bewilderment of the Ukrainian side", stated Oleg Voloshin.

He said in conclusion that the success of Ukraine's euro-integration depends entirely on Ukraine itself, so there is no need helping this process with an artificial shifting of the European Union border to the east.

Infotag's dossier: Romanian President Traian Basescu stated this week that the mainland Moldova [the Republic of Moldova minus its Transnistrian region] may become a part of Romania within next 25 years. In his words, in such case the European Union's border will come to run along the Dniester River. In his opinion, such kind of changes in this region of Europe may prompt other countries, in particular Ukraine, to joining the European Union.
