Two former speakers of the Transnistrian Supreme Soviet (parliament), Grigore Marakutsa and Yevgeniy Shevchuk, asked for the resignation of Transnistrian leader Igor Smirnov during discussions on constitutional amendments in parliament on 18 November.

The leader of the Obnovlenye (Renewal) party and speaker of the Transnistrian parliament in 2005-2009, Yevgeniy Shevchuk, bitterly criticized Smirnov s activity. He warned over the danger of state power usurpation if the new constitution is adopted, and requested Smirnov\'s resignation.

At the same time, Shevchuk\'s predecessor, speaker of the Tiraspol Supreme Soviet in 1991-2005, Grigore Marakutsa, said that Transnistrian leader Igor Smirnov usurped the state power, and has an inadequate behaviour. He added that the best solution would be Smirnov\'s resignation, according to the website www.tiras.ru. A former ally of the Tiraspol leader, Marakutsa said Smirnov should retire and go fishing together.

On 18 November, the Transnistrian parliament rejected a draft new constitution in the first reading. The document, which stipulates extended power for the region s leader, was initiated by Smirnov.
