Transnistrian conflict: Ghimpu reiterates demilitarization and democratization principles
Demilitarization and democratization of the Transnistrian region is an indispensable condition for achieving a solution to the Transnistria conflict, believes Moldova's Acting President, Parliament Chairman Mihai Ghimpu.
On Monday, he met in Chisinau with Mr. Bolat Nurgaliyev, the Special Representative of the OSCE Kazakhstan presidency, and spoke out also for a more active participation of the European Union and the United States in the quest for a peaceful and sustainable settlement of the Transnistria problem.
Ghimpu said the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe is an international forum so essential for dialog on Moldova's country reintegration efforts, and a reliable partner on its way towards Transnistrian conflict settlement.
He called upon the Kazakhstan presidency and other negotiation participants to transform the current format of the military mission into a multinational mission of civilian observers to be equipped with a sound international mandate.
Ghimpu welcomed the initiative to hold in Vienna on March 1-2 a new round of 5+2 consultations. He expressed hope that the just started OSCE presidency of Kazakhstan's will breathe in as new dynamic into the Transnistrian conflict settlement, and welcomed the intention of the Kazakhstan Minister of Foreign Affairs, State Secretary Kanat Saudabayev to visit Moldova soon.
As Infotag has already reported, the idea of demilitarization and democratization of the Transnistrian region is not something new. The official Chisinau has been promoting it for several years already. However, it is actually undermined by the resistance of the Transnistrian authorities, who constantly finger at Moldova's active cooperation with NATO within the NATO Partnership for Peace Program, at the military training of Moldovan army officers by the United States, and at a continuous reform of the Moldovan armed forces.
