Transnistrian authorities blocked access to polling stations (II)
Besides the above-mentioned Corjova apple of discord, the Transnistrian authorities are restricting the access of Transnistria residents to polling stations situated in the villages of Cocieri (Dubossary raion), Sanatauca (Floresti raion), and Varnitsa (Anenii Noi Raion), reported the Promo-Lex Association, which has 352 observers working at stations all over the republic today.
Promo-Lex Association's staff lawyer Pavel Postica said at a news conference today that seeing that the Corjova station was blocked, the Central Election Commission decided to send willing voters to the nearby Moldovan villages of Ustia and Cocieri.
"However, roads leading to these two and some other villages are restricted by the Transnistrian law enforcement. They do not let private cars go to Cocieri, Varnitsa or Sanatauca. At the Transnistria-arranged check stations between [Transnistria-controlled city of] Bendery and [Moldova-controlled suburban village of] Varnitsa, the separatist authorities today unfolded extra obstacles, so many voters have to leave their cars in Bendery and go on foot to Varnitsa to vote", said Postica.
In his words, reports coming from Promo-Lex observers are showing that in the rest of the Republic of Moldova territory, voting is continuing in normal orderly conditions, except some few minor irregularities. For instance, one can see electoral propaganda posters near some stations, or can hear instances of personal persuasion. And at the polling station in the Peresecina village (Orhei raion), a voting rubber stamp has mysteriously disappeared.
Acting President Mihai Ghimpu stated to journalists today he had expected such behavior from the Transnistrian authorities.
He explained, "This is happening because instead of resolving the Transnistria conflict, we spend years in speculations about whether or not we need a president, and about how we should elect him. I guess we will put an end to this problem today, and will start tackling other acute problems".
Infotag's dossier: Today, the Central Election Commission has opened 2,034 polling stations in Moldova (including 11 in the Transnistrian region) and 78 stations abroad. Voter registers contain a total of 2.66 million voters' names.
