Transnistria rejects idea of changing peacekeeping mechanism
The new Moldovan government's intention to replace the incumbent peacekeeper forces on the Dniester River with an international mission of civilian observers runs contrary to earlier accords and to the 1992 basic agreement on Transnistrian conflict settlement, the Tiraspol delegation to the Joint Control Commission (JCC) for the Transnistrian Conflict Settlement wrote in its statement that was made public at the JCC working meeting here on Thursday.
The document authors underscored that this replacement intention by the new Communist authorities does not practically differ from what the previous Communist authorities had sought to achieve for so many years. However, "the existing format of the peacekeeping operation on the Dniester has proved its exceptional efficiency and reliability over last 17 years".
The Tiraspol delegation reminded to the Moldovan colleagues that as recently as last March 18, the presidents of Russia, Moldova and Transnistria signed in Moscow a Joint Statement that confirmed the stabilizing role played by the current peacekeeping operation in the region, while its transformation into a peace-guarantee operation under the OSCE' aegis is expected to take place only upon Transnistrian conflict settlement.
The Transnistrian delegation expressed strong concern about the tendentious and extremely dangerous intentions of the new Moldovan leadership, and warned that in case Chisinau unilaterally denounces the 1992 Agreement, the peacekeeping process on the Dniester will become extremely complicated, and situation in the region may well destabilize.
