Transnistria leader sees no grounds for resuming 5+2 talks
Transnistrian leader Igor Smirnov is being fairly skeptical about a possibility of restarting 5+2 negotiations on settling Transnistria-Moldova relations.
Thursday, Smirnov received the Head of the OSCE Mission to Moldova, Ambassador Philip Remler and remarked inter alia that, firstly, the Republic of Moldova has not yet completed the shaping of its new state power organs.
Secondly, he said, the Transnistria-Moldova relationship topic is on the agenda of the forthcoming CIS Chisinau Summit [October 8-9], so it would be logical to wait and see forum results. And, thirdly, "we have on hands the March 18 Joint Statement signed by the Presidents of Russia, Transnistria and Moldova plus another 80 or so bilateral Transnistrian-Moldovan agreements, which would not be fulfilled until now. With an account of the new Moldovan authorities' statements, we have no grounds for optimism on this question, too".
Amb. Philip Remler said that in early November the OSCE will organize a seminar on interaction of the Transnistrian and Moldovan law enforcement organs, and Smirnov said the Transnistrian side stands ready to work in this field.
He said, "We reached quite a number of accords on cooperation between the organs, but Moldova unilaterally quitted the agreements. Crime has neither nationality nor statehood, so we are in need of a mechanism for resolving problems emerging in this sphere".
