Traian Basescu pays flying visit to Chisinau

Romania’s President Traian Basescu will be in Chisinau on August 20 on the second leg of his visit to Ukraine, Moldova, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey set for August 20 and 21, the Romanian Presidential Office has informed.

The Moldovan Presidential Office has not yet confirmed that Basescu is coming to Chisinau and that he will have a meeting with President Vladimir Voronin.

It is yet definite that Basescu will meet with the Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca. The meeting will be held at Codru Hotel in Chisinau at about 15.50, as the City Hall’s PR Division announced.

In a communique, the Presidential Office of Romanian has also said that during the visit, Basescu will meet with his counterparts Victor Yushchenko, Vladimir Voronin, Ilham Aliyev, Mikhail Saakashvili, Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The meetings will focus on the situation in Georgia and the consequences at regional level as well as on Romania’s bilateral relations with every of the five states.

A topic of interest to Romania is the development of cooperation in the Black Sea region by more actively engaging relevant multilateral players such as the European Union, NATO and OSCE.

This is Basescu's third visit to Moldova as President of Romania. The last visit, also a flying one, was made in January 2007. He then broached the subject of opening of two Romanian consulates in Balti and in Cahul following the imposition of the visa regime on Moldovans.//REPORTER.MD
