Traian Basescu: Moldova’s federalization is not a solution
“Moldova faces a lot of problems on the path to European integration and it needs support, but federalization is not a solution even if it works in other states,” Romania’s President Traian Basescu said during the debates “Future Cooperation in the Black Sea Area”, organized by Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Constanta on October 22.
The Romanian head of state said that federalization is not a solution and it should not be accepted, first of all by the EU. “The Republic of Moldova must be politically and economically encouraged to keep the democratic and European option,” Basescu said.
According to the president, the fact that the settlement of certain frozen conflicts is postponed arouses concern. "The 16 years of Moldo-Transdniestrian conflict, after which the present negotiation and peacekeeping mechanism were introduced, turned out to be a pause during which the illegal state of Transdniestria strengthened itself. This thing should have worried us,” Basescu said. REPORTER.MD
