Tiraspol's chief political objective is international recognition of PMR

The chief objective and main priority of Transnistria's foreign policy is to achieve the recognition of the Transnistrian state by the world community, the region's minister of foreign affairs Vladimir Yastrebchak stated at a briefing here.

He voiced hope the recognition will take place evolutionally, without shocks or wars or tragic events like the ones that happened in South Ossetia in August 2008.

Speaking of his recent meeting with Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Constantin Grishenko in Kiev, Yastrebchak highlighted the new Ukrainian authorities' "responsible approach and a serious wish to understand the essence of the Moldo-Transnistrian settlement".

"We tried to persuade the Ukrainian side that nobody should have an illusion that the Transnistria conflict is quickly soluble", presumes Vladimir Yastrebchak, who stressed that Ukraine should not focus on the 5+2 format alone, and should use more actively its plenary powers of a guarantor country.

"The Permanent Conference on Political Settlement has a fairly limited scope of tasks, so we believe it would be premature to expect that something extraordinary will happen when the Conference resumes work", said the Transnistrian foreign minister.

Assessing the recent informal consultations in Vienna, Yastrebchak characterized them as concrete and substantial ones. As for the Resolution taken at the Oslo Session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, which contained a demand that Russia must withdraw its troop and weapons from Transnistria, "it bore a declarative character".

"That was a Resolution bearing a recommendation character, and it will not have any substantial influence on the Moldo-Transnistrian settlement process, I am sure", said the Transnistrian ministry of foreign affairs.
